This unit takes a thematic approach to analyse the social, economic, cultural and political dimensions of war and its impact on society. Drawing from case studies since the nineteenth century, including Australia's experience, topics may include: citizenship and sacrifice, 'rules' of war, the distinctions between civilians and combatants, memorialising, home fronts, gender and war, race and war and total war versus limited war. This unit is about more than just conflict; it is also about movements against war and historical efforts to promote peace. Such topics may include: international diplomacy, grassroots peace movements, memorialising, anti-war movements and conscientious objection.
