Teaching Organisation: Two hours of lecture and one hour of tutorial supplemented with online activities (or equivalent)
Duration: 3 hours of classtime per week for 12 weeks or equivalent
This unit will explore themes in modern and contemporary Asian history leading to the region's economic and political rise. Using case studies from Japan, China or Korea, the unit will critically engage students with debates about Asian history from the time of the incursions by European nations, through the conflicts of the twentieth century, decolonisation, the Cold War and twenty-first century. Special emphasis will also be on East Asia's relationship with the West and Australia in particular.
