This unit offers an overview of contemporary Middle Eastern politics with an emphasis on the historical, cultural and economic past. Focus will be on the development of separate states such as Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia and their struggle for self determination. Some key issues may include colonialism; the influence of nationalism and religion, the politics of oil and the status of women.
